Your Short Guide to Installing a New Furnace

The furnace may be the most common heating system installed in homes in the U.S., but it’s still a system that most people have some difficulty understanding. When you decide it’s time for a new heater, it may be difficult to know where to start. We’ve compiled a short list of things you should know when you are beginning your search for the perfect heating system.

  • Choose a Quality Technician: This is perhaps the most important thing you can do when you are selecting a brand-new HVAC unit. A good technician will help you to assess your needs and choose a quality system that is suitable for all of your home’s needs. Check licensing and experience to ensure you’ve chosen a quality company.
  • Gas or Electric: Gas furnaces tend to cost less to run because natural gas costs less from the utility than electricity. But there are efficient electric furnaces available as well and these may cost less initially. Ask your technician for more information.
  • Find the Right Size: A good technician will take measurements and ask questions to make sure that the new furnace is the right size for your home. If you have a furnace installed that is even a little too small or too large for your home, it can malfunction and fail prematurely.
  • Choose a High AFUE: The efficiency rating of a furnace is its AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency). This shows what percentage of the energy your furnace takes in is actually converted into usable heat. So an AFUE of 94 would indicate a system in which 6% of the energy the system uses is lost during combustion or elsewhere in the system. However, this is still much better than the minimum efficiency rating of systems sold in the U.S.—a minimum AFUE of around 78 for most types of heaters.
