You Should Be Aware of These AC Repair Needs

Summertime is the most likely time of the year for your air conditioner to break down. This makes sense, since of course summertime is when your air conditioner gets the most use. But, it’s also incredibly inconvenient, right?

After all. the last thing you want to do in the middle of a summer day is deal with getting your AC repaired, and being uncomfortable in your home until an HVAC tech comes. Of course, you can fend off the worst of your repair needs with maintenance. Have you scheduled your tune-up yet this summer? As diligent as you are about AC care, you may still run into trouble.

We’ve shared some AC repair needs to be aware of so you know to call a pro right away, rather than sitting on a small problem until it grows into a major malfunction.

AC Repair Needs Our Team Handles Often

The number one way to prevent the biggest of AC repair needs is with annual maintenance (or biannual, if you have a heat pump system). Still, problems can occur with or without maintenance, and they’ll almost always be less major if you keep up on maintenance. So, it’s important to know the most common issues you may face:

  • Electrical Issues: This is more common of an AC malfunction problem than homeowners often realize—loose wiring or faulty relays can cause motors to shut down abruptly, or can lead to a tripped circuit breaker. If your air conditioner is continually tripping its breakers, give our pros a call so we can investigate what’s going on.
  • Refrigerant Loss: There’s a fairly common misconception among homeowners that refrigerant is something that “runs out,” as gasoline does from a vehicle or an appliance. On the contrary, your air conditioner does not consume refrigerant like fuel. Instead, your air conditioner is ideally supplied with enough refrigerant to last its entire lifespan. This is called a refrigerant leak. If your system is losing its refrigerant charge, it means you have a leak. The leak must be accurately located and then repaired, to avoid a major repair need and possibly even a system breakdown.
  • Condensate Drainage Problem: As your AC system operates, it draws moisture from the air that collects as condensate along your evaporator coil. The water drips into a pan, where the condensate drains and the pump removes it. This drain can get clogged up or break loose, causing water to drip out of the indoor unit and into your home—which can lead not only to air conditioner problems but also property damage if it’s not managed right away.
  • Broken Air Handler: The air handler of your air conditioner is the indoor component of the AC system that pushes air through the system to be cooled, and then into the ventilation system. This air handler could fail due to something like an overheated motor, bent fan blade, or even by becoming loose. If your air handler breaks down, you’ll have an ineffective air conditioner since no air will be able to move into the ventilation system.
  • Failed Capacitors: Your air conditioner has two types of capacitors—start capacitors, which ignite when the AC starts up, and run capacitors, which keep your system running. Failing capacitors are actually quite common, but are also always checked during your tune-up.
