What Happens During Heating Maintenance?

If you have been a follower of our blog for long, then you already know what we think of HVAC maintenance—it’s important! After all, maintenance tune-ups are the only way to ensure that your heater or air conditioner runs as effectively and efficiently as it can, for as long as it can. However, it’s one thing to be told you need routine HVAC maintenance, and another to understand why. Fortunately, we are here to clear that up.

Before winter officially gets here and you start using your heater on a daily basis, we do want to alert you to some basic DIY maintenance tasks that homeowners can and should be doing on their own. One of these tasks is to change out the air filter as needed. The standard HVAC system air filter isn’t there to protect your indoor air quality, but rather the system itself. If the air filters get too clogged up, they restrict airflow and cause a number of issues.

Depending on the type of air filters you have in place, you should be swapping yours out for a clean one every 1-3 months. During this time it’s also a good idea to clear away any debris and clutter from around the outdoor or indoor unit of your heater. Doing so will ensure there’s nothing to block airflow and efficacy.

Do You Really Need Routine Maintenance?

Annual (or biannual, if you’re using a year-round heat pump) heating tune-ups aren’t just a friendly suggestion. They’re an essential requirement if you want your heater to perform at its best, avoid emergency breakdowns, and last as long as possible. Whether you have a furnace, heat pump, or boiler, it works hard to keep your home warm and cozy all fall and winter, and as it does, it accumulates wear and tear. This is unavoidable. However, it doesn’t have to be a major hassle to your comfort or to your budget. Maintenance helps ensure that the wear and tear doesn’t go unchecked, and helps you avoid potentially serious problems.

Without this care, your heating system simply won’t work as well as you would expect it to. This means you’ll be paying more for a system that is wasting energy. Your heater will be unreliable, and you’ll likely face sudden emergency system breakdowns.

“Alright, I’m Convinced! So What Are the Steps of Maintenance?”

There are quite a few!

Checking the air filter is one of those steps. Yes, this is something you should be doing on your own, but we will make sure it’s clean when we clean your entire heater inside and out—one of the steps.

We also lubricate all the moving parts of your HVAC system, and we check for proper functionality of every component, such as the system controls and thermostat. Electrical connections get tightened as needed, and voltage and amperage are checked for safe levels.

Speaking of safety, that’s one of the biggest reasons you should have maintenance done on your heater! Especially if it is gas-powered. Gas-powered systems are not inherently dangerous, but they can certainly become so if they’re not cared for properly. Problems like cracked heat exchangers can lead to carbon monoxide exposure, making people ill and even leading to fatalities.
