Common HVAC Myths to Forget

The internet: a place that gives you unlimited access to a plethora of information. While this is an amazingly useful advancement in technology, it can also create chaos at times. We’re talking about when false information is shared online, leading people astray.

Sure, you can type in any question about any appliance in your home and receive a barrage of helpful tips and tricks, but that doesn’t always mean those tips and tricks are helpful, or even safe for that manner! If a service technician is trying to convince you that the following myths are true, then they are—sorry to say—not reputable Denver, CO HVAC professionals.

Myth #1: Refrigerant Needs Regular Refilling

Will your refrigerant ever need to be refilled (recharged)? Possibly! Does it need to be refilled each and every year? No! This is an unfortunately common myth spread by unprofessional and/or inexperienced handymen. Upon installation, your HVAC system is supplied with enough refrigerant to ideally last its entire lifespan. Unlike other fuel sources, refrigerant is recycled and does not deplete from your system.

So, what if you’re told by a reputable HVAC pro that your refrigerant does need to be recharged? The only time our team will tell you this is if you have a leak. And recharging your refrigerant should be immediately followed up by finding the source of the leak and repairing it so that you don’t lose refrigerant again. Losing refrigerant can do irreversible damage to your HVAC system, so if you do have a leak, be sure to address it right away!

Myth #2: HVAC Systems Never Need Maintenance

Sure, if you want a system that breaks down prematurely, has frequent repair needs, and works inefficiently, you could follow this advice. But the fact of the matter is that every HVAC system needs a maintenance session at least once a year. If you have a year-round heat pump or ductless system that works on heat pump technology, then you should have this service done once every 6 months.

During maintenance, our technicians thoroughly inspect your system, checking for any components that need adjusting. When you think about our frigid winters and comparably scorching summers, it’s no wonder that both your AC and heating systems accumulate a lot of wear and tear—this is surveyed during inspection. We’ll also clean the system, and make any repair recommendations to you we deem necessary, so you can manage them right away and avoid a much larger emergency later on down the road.

Myth #3: You Only Need to Change the Air Filter Once a Year

Please don’t follow this advice! Your air filter, despite the belief that it protects your indoor air quality, is there to protect the inside components of your HVAC systems from dirt, debris, and other particles that could otherwise get inside.

Neglecting a clogged or dirty air filter can lead to not only decreased air quality, but will force your HVAC systems to work harder to do their jobs. This means they won’t work as efficiently as they should be able to, and will break down a lot earlier than they otherwise would have.
